Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the characteristics of   President Hugo Chavez‘s speech before the creation of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, PSUV. Such speech gains relevance because of the historical time in which President Chavez has proposed the formation of a political party that would gather all the Venezuelan’s leftists. In this sense, the study gains relevance as long as it determines the elements used to fit into the political imagination of Venezuelans. This work involves an exploratory research and presents a cross-documentary study, which implements the technique of discourse analysis. After analyzing a specific speech (December 15, 2006; day in which Chavez justified the creation of the new party), the results point to think that the presidential speech serves as a persuasive tool to legitimize both the government policy and the president position.
