Abstract
Indigenous and rural culture and spirituality in Mexico: The festivals of identity
In this essay I present some reasons that are fundamental for carrying out the Festivals of Identity that the Central Unit of Studies for Social Development of the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos has been promoting for fifteen years with the singular purpose of awakening the conscience of the population that lives in the rural and marginal communities concerning the cultural identity and the spirituality of our indigenous roots and their importance for the contemporary world. These festivals are celebrated in significant places: archeological areas such as Xochicalco y Chalcatzingo; or places connected to the nature conservation; the lakes of Zempoala; places connected to community customs: the Hills of Santa Barbara in Totolapan; or important places in the process of creation of the societys historical utopia, like the field of Cuajar in Anenecuilco, where the General Emiliano Zapata first distributed land.
