Buscando el pasado de una ciudad en su futuro, Kuala Lumpur a 40 años de 1969
Resumen
El artículo propone una ‘relectura’ del pasado de Kuala Lumpur a partir de su tiempo presente. A 40 años de distancia, los habitantes de Kuala Lumpur viven una suerte de amnesia colectiva la cual se traduce en su aparente indiferencia para rememorar, mediante actividades específicas, los hechos de mayo de 1969. Sin embargo, repasando la forma cómo en el marco de su modernización la ciudad se ha transformado, el artículo sugiere que los habitantes de Kuala Lumpur no sólo rememoran los hechos de 1969 sino que, además, lo hacen de formas incluso más vigorosas y novedosas. Este escrito concluye proponiendo nuevas perspectivas en el futuro de la ciudad con base en lo que considera es una memoria urbana atípica que esbozan tanto habitantes como autoridades en esta ciudad.
Abstract
The article proposes a new reading of Kuala Lumpur’s recent past in current times. In its hypothesis the article states that 40 years after the May 1969 riots the inhabitants of Kuala Lumpur experience a sort of collective amnesia which is demonstrated by their apparent indifference to remember, through specific activities, those violent events. Nevertheless, reviewing the way how the city has been transformed it is suggested that the inhabitants of Kuala Lumpur not only remember the 1969 riots, but actually they remember them through vigorous and innovative means. The article concludes proposing new perspectives on the future of the city based on what the author considers an atypical urban memory sketched by both the inhabitants and authorities of the city as well.
