Peer-support in the dissertation process
Abstract
The low graduation rates in postgraduate education have been related withthe difficulties students meet when having to write their dissertations. Departingfrom a conception of writing as a social and situated practice, thisqualitative study expands the focus to what doctoral candidates do in orderto complete their dissertations. We explore the positive influence that relationshipswith peers have on the dissertation process through the analysisof 20 in-depth interviews with candidates and recent graduates in Linguisticsand Education PhD programs. Results show that social relations facilitateaccess to information and procedural and practical knowledge relatedwith different aspects of the doctoral research. Based on these results, wesuggest that institutions should implement actions that encourage students´participation in groups that promote peer interaction, especially during thelast period of the doctoral research and writing process.
