Resumen
La diabetes mellitus y la periodontitis son enfermedades con alta prevalencia a nivel mundial. Últimamente se ha dedicado gran esfuerzo en describir la comorbilidad de estas dos afecciones, descritas como un vínculo bidireccional. Se ha demostrado que la terapia periodontal no quirúrgica se asocia con la reducción de los niveles de glucemia en estos pacientes, por lo que el odontólogo asume un rol importante en el diagnóstico precoz de la enfermedad. Pocos estudios describen opiniones, manejo de la información y comportamiento práctico de esta población; no obstante, ninguno fue realizado en Venezuela. El objetivo fue describir la perspectiva médico-odontológica de la relación bidireccional entre diabetes y periodontitis en el Municipio Libertador del estado Mérida. Con enfoque cuantitativo, alcan ce descriptivo, diseño no experimental y de corte transversal, se aplicó una encuesta con escala de Likert a odontólogos y endocrinólogos que ejercen en este municipio. El análisis de los datos se realizó mediante estadística descriptiva y se representaron en tablas y gráficos. Los resultados revelaron que el 70% de los endocrinólogos y el 50% de los odontólogos estaban totalmente de acuerdo en que los diabéticos tienen mayor predisposición a la periodontitis, solo el 40% de los endocrinólogos orienta a sus pacientes a control odontológico, y el 48% de los odontólogos establece siempre interconsulta con el médico. Se concluye que existe una disparidad entre el conocimiento y la práctica clínica en la relación bidireccional entre diabetes y periodontitis, por lo tanto, es crucial desa rrollar estrategias que unifiquen la aplicación de la evidencia científica por parte de ambas especialidades, fortaleciendo la colaboración transdisciplinaria para mejorar la salud bucal y sistémica de los pacientes.
