Abstract
The quality of the surface water is evaluated at the Santa Inés Industrial Complex’s area of influence, in Barinas, Venezuela, with the purpose of assessing the environmental liabilities resulting from the discharge of effluents from the existing infrastructure at the site, especially the one related with oil industry; to serve as a baseline for the Environmental and Sociocultural Impact Assessment of the Batalla de Santa Inés Refinery, the largest infrastructure to be located in this complex and, finally, based on the results obtained, recommend the most suitable site for the discharge of its effluents. To define the water quality in four of the most important streams at the Complex’s area of influence (Jaboncillo, El Barro, El Medio and Morrocoy), a series of samplings were carried out. The criteria for determining the quality of the water in the points sampled were defined according to the potential uses with reference to the Standards for classification and quality control of water bodies and discharges or liquid effluents, published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Venezuela on October 11, 1995. The results that define the current condition of water courses are represented through maps where the spatial and temporal variation of the quality spectrum can be appreciated. Given the affectation that the effluent discharges from the Flow Stations causes on the receiver streams in the study area, it is recommended to promptly improve and adapt the effluent treatment to reduce the environmental liabilities, as well as to locate the discharges of wastewater from The Refinery on El Barro stream, given its current level of water affectation.
