Factorial study on interactions of OH- group in aqueous medium and EO group of nonionic surfactant during emulsion clarification stage
Resumen
In this paper, we study the effect of three factors, concentrations of surfactant and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and presence of silica particles, on clarification rate of o/w emulsions during the first 20 minutes, after their formation, by mean of a factorial experimental design 23. Emulsions were prepared with aqueous solutions and liquid paraffin at two surfactant concentrations, 25 and 100 mM; then other additives were added. Results show that clarification rate of emulsion at 25 mM changes with NaOH concentration, but not with similar electrolytes such as NaCl and HCl. This suggests that OH- groups (from aqueous system) and EO groups (from surfactant) interact in some degree. To understand and validate these interactions, a variety of experiments were carried out, under different conditions,. Finally, to explain emulsion clarification rate behavior, we propose two models: a surfactant molecular model and a clarification mechanism at microscopic-molecular level based on the hydroxyl ion-nonionic surfactant interaction.
