Resumen


Este artículo trata de situar a Congo Man en el contexto de la crisis post-independencia del Congo y de determinar, hasta donde sea posible, la posición que Sparrow, como descendiente de africanos, mantuvo ante el desarrollo de esta catástrofe. Usando la metáfora que sugiere Congo Man, este artículo tratará de determinar desde qué matorrales, desde qué posición privilegiada en la jungla de su corazón Sparrow observa a su hermano y doble congoleño. En este artículo se prestará atención particularmente a esa extraña risa frenética y el aparentemente inagotable deleite con que Sparrow como narrador/protagonista ha interpretado la risa de Umba por más de cuatro décadas. Nuestra investigación apunta a la conclusión de que lo grotesco de la risa de Umba y la actuación de Sparrow es inseparable del espíritu reduccionista de la mascarada de carnaval, la cual una vez desenmascaradas, revela un horror: la calavera debajo de la sonrisa.
